„Enhancing Access to New Approach Methodologies (NAMs): The NATworks Platform and NAT Database as Global Resources for Animal-Free Research“
Julia Radzwill (Doctors Against Animal Experiments)
Over the past two decades, New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) have evolved rapidly, introducing advanced technologies such as human organoids, Organ-on-chip systems, 3D bioprinting and digital twins. These innovations offer significant potential to replace animal experiments, in line with the 3Rs principles. Yet, the growing diversity and complexity of NAMs make it increasingly difficult for scientists, regulators and funding bodies to stay informed about current models, applications and regulatory readiness.
This presentation introduces the NATworks Platform and the NAT Database – two freely accessible resources designed to support the identification and exchange of information on NAMs. We will demonstrate how these tools enable scientists to locate suitable models for specific research fields, compare technological developments across countries, identify regulatory-approved methods, and discover academic or industry collaborators. Regulators can use these resources to track validated and certified NAMs, while funding bodies can pinpoint well-established or underdeveloped areas requiring strategic support. Additionally, NATworks and the NAT Database enable both early-career and experienced scientists to discover career opportunities and collaboration prospects across the NAMs community. Finally, we will discuss how these initiatives align with global policy movements, including the forthcoming EU roadmap for phasing out animal testing in chemical safety assessments.
